Highest Break Record Broken in World Snooker Tour
Onyee Ng has broken the women's record for highest break in the World Snooker Tour, scoring 137 points in a single break to win the frame.
I enjoy Snooker from afar, as an OK billiards player. I don't think I'll ever own a house where it's feasible to devote a room to a Snooker table — the minimum room size that allows space on all sides for comfortable cueing is 22 ft × 16 ft; the table is huge. The balls are worth different point values, and have to be pocketed by alternating between a red ball and any of the others. The reds are left in the pocket, while the others are placed back onto the table and can be pocketed again; once all reds are pocketed, the remaining balls must be pocketed in a specific order. A maximum break in Snooker is 147 points, achieved by pocketing red-then-black-then-red-then-etc and then the rest of the colored balls.
Ng was only 10 points away from achieving a maximum break in a tournament, which is an impressive achievement. Something to consider as you watch the game is to recognize that the player is always thinking at least one stroke ahead and sometimes two — the current ball is pocketed in such a way to place the cue ball in the right position for the next stroke (whose angle and placement also needs to be just right for the stroke after). Scoring a century (a break over 100 points) requires balancing on that edge for upwards of 26 strokes.
