Red Rock

A morning among the red sandstone domes of Valley of Fire State Park.

A close-up of a sandstone wall, filling the frame with horizontal bands of terracotta and salmon-colored rock. Fine parallel layers of sediment ripple across the surface like wood grain.

A desert landscape under a deep blue cloudless sky. Smooth, rounded mounds of red-orange sandstone fill the foreground and rise toward darker rock outcrops on the right, with sparse green brush and distant hazy mountains on the left horizon.

A massive dome of red sandstone rises against a clear blue sky, its surface pocked with weathered holes and hollows. Scrubby desert brush and dry golden grass grow at its base in the foreground.

A close-up of smooth sandstone with diagonal layers sweeping from lower-left to upper-right in warm shades of rust and copper. A small lens-shaped layer of rock sits atop the larger underlying layer near the center.

A sweeping wall of red sandstone fills the frame, dotted with small weathered hollows. Two adult desert bighorn sheep stand small and distant on a ledge near the center, nearly camouflaged against the rock, with two adolescents following in the rear. Desert brush and broken stone lie scattered in the foreground.

A desert canyon view looking out over pale cream-colored sandstone in the foreground that gives way to a band of deep red rock formations in the middle distance. Gray-blue mountains rise along the horizon under a clear sky.
